Depending on the need to detect harmful, toxic, explosive or flammable substances, it is first necessary to proceed with a careful risk analysis activity followed by carefully choosing of the type of detector. Added to this is the decision to make choices in the context not only of fixed detection systems but also of devices called "lifesavers", i.e. portable devices carried by personnel to signal the presence of gas or of hazardous atmospheres.
Where the formation of a dangerous explosive atmosphere is envisaged, it is possible to adopt a series of measures whose purpose is to prevent or limit formation of the same. The same applies to the formation of toxic atmospheres.
One of these measures is the monitoring of concentrations around installations or storage points by means of gas detection systems which, if necessary, automatically activate further protection measures.
