Fire hydrants on a ship are an essential safeguard for dealing with emergency situations.


The heart of the system is typically a centrifugal pumps with high flow capacity and able to handle water and any foam, installed inside the ship's engine.



It is very common to find them installed near general service, bilge and ballast pumps. The SOLAS specifications establish the redundancy criteria of such systems (number, location, etc.).

The power of the pumps is usually entrusted to an electric motor.


The necessary fire supply pipes (FIRE MAINS) are protected against seawater corrosion (usually by galvanising).

Nozzles with different types of orifices (depending on the capacity and type of jet required) and water cannons can be installed at duct terminals.

The operation of the main and emergency fire pump is subject to verification and maintenance. Some of the controls include the status of the pumps (bearings, seals, noises, vibrations, etc.).

If the ship is exposed to frost or is even allowed to navigate the polar routes, these installations are subject to additional and more restrictive design and management constraints.
